Keywords – The most important part of Search Engine Optimization

Understanding keywords and what they can do for you are not just all, but implementing them correctly is what that gets a site or blog top rankings in search engines. The keywords that are used are the most important factor that determines whether a website / blog rank well or not. Many webmasters think that they already know the best keyword for their websites. If they haven’t done some research, they are usually wrong.

Classification of keywords

We at GenuineSEO like to classify keywords (search terms) into three sections.

  • Single keywords
  • Multiple keywords
  • Key phrases

Single keywords

Single keywords often don’t make much sense. To elaborate on that, you do not find individuals searching for just “software” or “music” in search engines, but they are always associate their search to a product. For example, people search for “SEO software” or “Michael Jackson’s music” or something similar to that. Single words are never found to be that effective in generating traffic and most often someone already has a well established position for the keyword. Remember that you will be competing against millions of other pages.

It is impractical to think that a new website could rank number one on a keyword like “software” or “music”. More established websites who have been on the Internet for several years will have the big advantage of a better link popularity.

Multiple keywords

Multiple keywords are similar to keywords but only enhanced and most widely used by searchers using the internet looking for information or looking to buy stuff. Search engines generally analyze all the pages of your website. Multiple keywords are keywords that have more than one word; they normally extend your keyword list. As mentioned in Single keywords “people search for “SEO software” or “Michael Jackson’s music” or something similar to that”.

Using this type of keywords in a website will increase the probability of search engines finding out that your website is relevant to the search topic. As soon as search engines consider your website relevant to this topic, it will be much easier to get high rankings for such keywords.

Key phrases

All the three types of classification are on a very similar note but with a slight variation. Even though most SEO experts and consultants would consider multiple keywords as key phrases, we would like to keep them both separate. Key phrase is like a quote or a very short statement usually you find in books or even in a regular conversation that people use. Let’s take a look at an example to understand this better.

Key Phrase: How to build a ship?

As some others might say “How to”, “build” and “ship” are individual keywords and when put together they become a multiple keyword that is highly effective. However, we call this a key phrase, as you can see this is a very specific and targeted short statement. This would be most often standard across millions of searchers looking for information on how to build a ship.

An important point to note with key phrase is that, they are hard to form and hard to research on. This takes a lot of time and effort from the person who is trying to optimize a website. A good understanding of the purpose of the site and what the site deals with is essential.
