In simple terms keywords are nothing but the words that web surfers enter in search engines to look for information on the World Wide Web. It is essential that you get these keywords to optimize your site as it is pointless to optimize your articles and site for keyword that nobody uses or which has very less target audience.

It is also important that you use the right keywords for your online marketing campaign to make it a success. Always make sure that you only use keywords that are relevant to your website. If you target the wrong keyword you will not be driving the right traffic and will end up wasting a lot of time and money. This is why it is important to invest some time to find the best keywords.

Tools to research on keywords

The ones mentioned below are some of the tools that I use regularly to optimize GenuineSEO. Try them out and if you have any that I’ve not mentioned, feel free to share your thoughts as well.

Google Adwords

Wordtracker

SEO Book Keyword tool

WordStream

To be able to use the right keywords and research on the right keywords, first need to understand your target audience. Look at your competitors see what they are talking about, understand why you have visited the site, what did you first search for when you arrived at their site. All these questions will help you understand your keyword requirements better and drive the right type of audience to your site.

Today’s SEO experts do it the simple way by using some of the best SEO tools like SEO Studio to study competitors keywords. Sometimes even the most complicated things can be really simple and easy to do like SEO. The first step that you will need to follow to ensure good and selective audience is to research and use the right keywords

In extension to my previous post on “Keywords – The most important part of Search Engine Optimization“ I would like to mention about breaking up the search terms (Keywords) GenuineSEO style. Multiple keywords are usually the keywords that work best for search engine optimization. Most often people who use this keyword type are looking for a solution to their problem and the target audience is huge.

Keyword: Search Engine Optimization

We at GenuineSEO break-up a keyword or a key phrase into two. The first section we call “the product” and the second its “associate”.

The search keyword we used to search in Google was Search Engine Optimization which is “the product” and all the words mentioned below in bold is each keywords “associate”.

When a product and its associate are together it makes it a strong keyword (multiple keywords). When it comes to multiple keywords, it’s not just the product that matters, but also it’s associate that adds value to the ranking of sites.

search engine marketing

This break-up structure helps us build strong multiple keywords that in turn help us rank high on search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN.

Understanding keywords and what they can do for you are not just all, but implementing them correctly is what that gets a site or blog top rankings in search engines. The keywords that are used are the most important factor that determines whether a website / blog rank well or not. Many webmasters think that they already know the best keyword for their websites. If they haven’t done some research, they are usually wrong.

Classification of keywords

We at GenuineSEO like to classify keywords (search terms) into three sections.

Single keywords

Multiple keywords

Key phrases

Single keywords

Single keywords often don’t make much sense. To elaborate on that, you do not find individuals searching for just “software” or “music” in search engines, but they are always associate their search to a product. For example, people search for “SEO software” or “Michael Jackson’s music” or something similar to that. Single words are never found to be that effective in generating traffic and most often someone already has a well established position for the keyword. Remember that you will be competing against millions of other pages.

It is impractical to think that a new website could rank number one on a keyword like “software” or “music”. More established websites who have been on the Internet for several years will have the big advantage of a better link popularity.

Multiple keywords

Multiple keywords are similar to keywords but only enhanced and most widely used by searchers using the internet looking for information or looking to buy stuff. Search engines generally analyze all the pages of your website. Multiple keywords are keywords that have more than one word; they normally extend your keyword list. As mentioned in Single keywords “people search for “SEO software” or “Michael Jackson’s music” or something similar to that”.

Using this type of keywords in a website will increase the probability of search engines finding out that your website is relevant to the search topic. As soon as search engines consider your website relevant to this topic, it will be much easier to get high rankings for such keywords.

Key phrases

All the three types of classification are on a very similar note but with a slight variation. Even though most SEO experts and consultants would consider multiple keywords as key phrases, we would like to keep them both separate. Key phrase is like a quote or a very short statement usually you find in books or even in a regular conversation that people use. Let’s take a look at an example to understand this better.

Key Phrase: How to build a ship?

As some others might say “How to”, “build” and “ship” are individual keywords and when put together they become a multiple keyword that is highly effective. However, we call this a key phrase, as you can see this is a very specific and targeted short statement. This would be most often standard across millions of searchers looking for information on how to build a ship.

An important point to note with key phrase is that, they are hard to form and hard to research on. This takes a lot of time and effort from the person who is trying to optimize a website. A good understanding of the purpose of the site and what the site deals with is essential.
